McInnes Manufacturing Ltd. began in 1989 when Ross and Diane McInnes were dairy farming on their 150 cow farm in Northland, New Zealand. They were not satisfied with the performance of calf feeding equipment that was available at that time, and as Ross had had draughting experience, they designed a feeding system for their own use. The design criteria that they set were:
It MUST be suitable to feed large numbers of calves quickly, with all calves getting their share of milk. It MUST be easy to clean.
It MUST be easily handled by one person.
It MUST be simple and yet robust enough to take daily punishment.
Most importantly it MUST be efficient, not only for the calves' health, but
for the rearers health.
The benefits and results from using the calf feeders were so
great that they decided to make them available to all farmers in
New Zealand. The Milk Bar 5 was exhibited for the first time at
the New Zealand National Fieldays in 1990, where it won a design
award. The response from fellow farmers to the Milk Bar 5 was
overwhelming as, like the McInnes's, many were not satisfied with the performance
of the calf feeding equipment available at the time, and could
see the benefits of the Milk Bar system. Encouraged by this response
new ideas and products were developed and they began to market and sell
the Milk Bar Products at Agricultural Fieldays and retail outlets
throughout New Zealand.
Milk Bar Products have now expanded to other parts of the world and
have been manufactured in Australia since 1992, in Chile since
1994, and U.S.A. and Korea since 1996.
Milk Bar Products are distributed to most
other agricultural countries.
